Etihad Airways said its stopover programme – relaunched in May 2024 – has achieved “exceptional growth” and “exceeded expectations”, contributing to a significant boost in Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector.
The programme welcomed 24,000 international stopover visitors in the first half of 2024, compared to 7,000 stopover visitors in the second half of 2023.
Exclusive to Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi stopover programme allows passengers flying through the UAE city have the option to stopover and select a complimentary hotel as part of the booking process. Guests can choose a free stay of one or two nights in hotels across the city.
The programme does require guests to book directly through Etihad’s website.
“The growth of our Abu Dhabi Stopover programme has far exceeded our projections,” said Etihad Airways CEO Antonaldo Neves. “We’ve seen international visitors more than triple in just six months. This success not only showcases Abu Dhabi’s appeal as a destination but also demonstrates the programme’s effectiveness in encouraging travellers to experience the emirate’s wonders.”
With increased bookings and growing demand is driving the programme’s target of 75,000 international stopover visitors in 2024.
“This innovative initiative is clearly resonating with international travellers, offering them a compelling reason to explore our emirate,” said DCT Abu Dhabi director general for tourism Mohammed Al Geziry. “The programme’s success reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a must-visit destination and encourages travellers to plan longer stays in the future.”
Travellers can turn their holiday into two with the programme, allowing them to relax at the city’s beaches or sample its vibrant dining scene before carrying on the final leg of their journey.
